The Franciscan Order arrived in Ambon, Ternate and Banda along with Portuguese traders in 1522. However Francis Xavier arrived in Ambon on the 14th February 1546. He stayed in Ambon for about four months and then visited Ternate, Halmahera and Morotai. He returned to Ambon and stayed for a few months. After Xavier left Ambon other Jesuit missionaries arrived and extended their ministry.
The Saint Francis Xavier Church can be found on Pattimura Street, in the centre of Ambon city. The church is situated within the Ambonia Diocesan Complex. In this complex you can also see a large statute of Francis Xavier and also you can visit the Rumphius library, where many books about the history of Ambon can be found. Across the road in Rumphius’ grave can be seen in the Xavier Senior High School Complex. Rumphius (1627-1702) arrived from the Netherlands with the VOC but he spent most of his time studying the Moluccan flora and he wrote several books about the plants in the Moluccas.
Ordo Fransiskan telah masuk di Ambon, Ternate dan Banda bersama pedagang Portugis pada tahun 1522. Namun Fransikus Xaverius baru tiba dan tinggal di Ambon pada tanggal 14 Februari 1546. Empat bulan kemudian mengunjungi Ternate, Halmahera dan Morotai lalu kembali tinggal di Ambon untuk beberapa bulan. Setelah Xaverius tinggalkan Ambon para misionaris dari Ordo Yesuit datang untuk memperluas pelayanan mereka.
Gereja Santo Fransiskus Xaverius dapat ditemukan di Jalan Pattimura, di pusat kota Ambon. Gereja ini terletak di tengah kompleks Keusukupan Amboina. Di kompleks itu juga terdapat suatu patung besar Fransikus Xaverius dan juga Perpustakaan Rumphius di mana banyak buku mengenai sejarah Ambon bisa ditemukan. Di seberang jalan kubur Rumphius dapat dilihat di dalam kompleks SMA Xaverius. Rumphius (1627-1702) datang dari Belanda bersama dengan VOC tetapi dia menghabiskan waktunya untuk memperhatikan flora dan fauna yang ada di Maluku dan menulis beberapa buku mengenai tumbuh-tumbuhan di Maluku.
